Lesedi is a community-run preschool and primary school located in a rural area about 14km from Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. The school was established by the co-founders of Ngoko Safaris in 2014 and is now funded and supported by the Ngoko Charitable Trust, a registered UK-based charity (Charity No: 1163965).
Lesedi Primary School received official accreditation in May 2016 and now has 150+ pupils. At present the school teaches Grades 1-3, along with ECD "A" and ECD "B". A further grade is added each year, so Grade 4 will be introduced in January 2018.
Government schools in Zimbabwe are severely under-resourced, with shortages of teachers, textbooks and equipment. Private schools are generally too expensive for most parents. As a community school, supported by donations, we strive to become a center of educational excellence for the surrounding communities whilst charging only nominal school fees. We have introduced computer lessons - something of a rarity in rural Zimbabwe - and have connected the school to mains water and electricity. The children receive two nutritious meals a day, vastly improving their welfare.
Our long-term plans for the school are ambitious. We already offer adult literacy classes and will introduce a range of vocational training as teachers become available. In addition to mainstream education, we aim to provide support for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities. We have also applied to build a medical clinic for the community, where there is a high incidence of HIV and AIDS. Eventually we hope to add a secondary school so that our pupils can continue their education locally and to the same high standard.
